Ground-breaking girl group the Marvelettes were the first successful female group and the first hitmaking act for Motown after the Miracles. Gladys Horton formed the quartet in the Gee Club of Inkster High School with Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Wyanetta Cowart (known as Juanita) and Georgeanna Dobbins, who dropped out prior to the Motown deal, replacement Wanda Young sharing lead duties with Horton. Debut single 'Please Mr. Postman' is the immortal classic that spawned the 1961 debut album of the same name, part-shaped by Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye, a must-have capturing their budding glory.
