Ceastra, the debut album from multi-instrumentalist Jerence Barker, contains a single musical suite of original compositions. It is all about memory and remembering... Ceastra’s themes and movements represent a chronological musical trip through the artist’s life, starting with the opening movement “Memento Vivere” (Remember to live) - a cacophony of superimposed and blended audio samples of the friends and music from his childhood, including his first piano composition created when he was 7 years old. The main theme 'Ceastra' follows, and sets a motif which is repeated several times throughout the suite, and represents the composer coming out into his musical life. The piece then progresses through his teen years, with the movement “To Mind” recalling a first love, on dual 12-string guitars and piano. Then things get moving in “The Bridge”; this piece contains many sub-themes, ranging from a funky shuffling segment, through a pseudo-polka, into four-on-the-floor beats, to clips of a symphonic/classical styling, and climaxing into the all-out prog rock 7/8-timed “52”. The passing into the after-death world occurs in “Transition”, with call-backs into the original themes. The sweeping finale of “Memento Mori” (Remember You Will Die) expresses the remembering after death, the emotions of those continuing on after, and a a final statement that leaves a feeling of peace and relief as it sweeps into oblivion. All synthesizers, keyboards, drums, percussion instruments, and choral vocals were all performed by Jerence.
