With her beautiful voice, contemporary style, and cutting-edge compositions, she raises the bar of excellence for young jazz singers.' - Judy Niemack, Jazz Singer ‘A quirky and modernist singer’ Time Out 'An emergent young vocalist' - Chris May, www.allaboutjazz.com '...Sung with elegant assurance' - Chris Parker, The Vortex Jazz Club Step Up The title track came to me at the beginning of 2010, at a time when I was moving back to London after spending 18 months in Berlin. I got thinking about the everyday experiences we have that shape us as people, and make us who we are. Each person we meet has the power to reach and to change us, which can always be a positive thing. I think that we often forget how important these experiences are, however brief or long they last. Happiness is after all, worth it, even if it is only for one day. This philosophy doesn't have to devalue the meaning of our experiences, on the contrary, it means we get more than one shot at love, at life, at living, and that means as artists we get a lot to write about, and thats pretty cool. I got to know at this time who went on to have a profound influence on my life. He taught me to believe in myself, to be ambitious and to set my sights high, inspiring me in music, life and in love. He drove me to complete this album, and I would like to dedicate it to him- To Richard Turner. An inspiring, talented, generous and compassionate friend, trumpeter and composer, who dedicated his life to music and to all those around him. To stepping up. Always. Lyrics Step Up, music and text by F. Bearman. For Richard Every day has been leading up to this Finally I can see clearly now. Those before have helped me The road before has guided me. Meetings and partings we cannot erase Only make us stronger and wiser to take on the day. If I hadnt met you If I hadn't known you Were I not to have known you There wouldn't be a part of you with me. Is this it? There could be others. Are you fine to carry on? It could be something, All you have to do is.... Telling stories comes naturally Sometimes we feel its better to hide the truth The lies I've told have caught me The truth I've told has saved me Hiding from a history we cannot erase When it only shapes us and makes us who we are today If I want to get to know you If you want to know me like I want to Then we'll have to have faith in the past. We try to be Who we think we ought to be Only to find there is no other Only you. Still, Spanish text by Pablo Neruda, translated by W.S. Merwin, music by F. Bearman I like for you to be still: it is as though you were absent, and you hear me from far away and my voice does not touch you. It seems as though you eyes had flown away and it seems that a kiss had sealed your mouth. I like for you to be still: it is as though you were absent, distant and full of sorrow as though you had died. One word then, one smile, is enough. And I am happy, happy that it's not true. As all things are filled with my soul you emerge from the things, filled with my soul. You are like my soul, a butterfly of dream, and you are like the word Melancholy. Ocean Wide, words and text by F.Bearman, Oh ocean wide Weeping signs of lament Drawing sighs of sorrow From the barren shores. Oh underneath violet milked, raven skies Awash with wishes Hope flight across the scene Hopes are dashed through changing tides. Kyrpis, original poem by Sappho, translated by Anne Carson, music by F. Bearman, A thousand miles from home To this holy temple where is your graceful grove of apple trees, and incense burning. And in it a horse meadow has come into bloom with sweet flowers and breezes like honey are blowing. And in it cold water makes clear sound through apple branches and roses the whole place is shadowed and down from radient-shaking leaves sleep comes dropping. In this place you Kypris taking up in gold cups delicately nectar mingled with festivities: pour. Awakening, music and text by F. Bearman Loves a game we like to play makes it easier to walk away. To scared of things to end, we just pretend. Scared of what may be and what may not be. So you find yourself alone I can't see you there and I know you're gone It was love for me, it was love for But still we pulled away from what was right to find ourselves alone and though we try hard to fight the pain we both know.. Love Theres only love. Thank you to my teachers over the years, I learnt so much from you, and without your inspiration and encouragement, I would never have got this far; Martin Read, Penny MacKay, Martin Hathaway, Pete Churchill, Anita Wardell, Judy Niemack and Kurt Rosenwinkel.
