The Crooked River Suite This suite is an exploration and celebration of the gunslinger, bank robber, dance hall diva, gambler, and smuggler in all of us. The great American outlaw has long occupied a special place in our history and I think it is high time we reflected anew on those renegades who for better or worse, touch a cord in our collective soul. The outlaw has often stood against the criminals of real concern, the Corporate Robber Barons. I must admit that when I hear of a modern day Jesse James counting coup on one of these Corporate Fat Cat Temples of Theft a large part of me hopes the outlaw rebel gets away clean, rides off into the sunset, and spends the loot foolishly in some low down dive on cheap booze and hard lovin’. Sometimes you have to both stand up and cut loose or curl up in a ball and die. You must admit, the folks in these tunes, for good or ill ain’t goin’ down easy. While I’m at it a shout to some of the outlaws who made this happen: Silas R. Shand who believed and co-wrote Smugglers Road with me, Jen Ambrose who gave voice to Tell Mamma, and as always to my partner in crime Betty Jean, who conspired with me on Drunkin Fun, and Beer n My Boss. You may blame the remainder on me. Enjoy! Patrick Dodd aka Slim Douglas 1/2/12 HBDMOM Notes on Drunken Fun Let’s face it America has been through some rough weather of late. Short pay and hard times have been pretty much the norm for a lot of us these last few years. And like all tough times these grim days have left us with our hard side up. With Occupy this and Tea Party that it seems Americans everywhere have been having a street party of discontent. But a funny thing happened on the way to the revolution. I found out that folks still need to laugh. Everywhere I go it is evident that these hard times ain’t robbed us of our collective sense of humor. Laughter is one of the ways we have always dealt with our troubles, as is song. I decided to put them together. It turned out to be the perfect merger. I tend to do a lot of my pickin’ around potbellied stoves, campfires and the barstools in my favorite local dives and these songs reflect the humor and good natured fellowship that I dearly love about these places. The course language of these songs is an honest reflection of the crude humor that always accompanies tough times. I hope you take it all in the light manner intended. Laughin’ and singin’ silly songs are two of our most potent weapons against despair – so, order up a tall cold one and sing along, it’ll do you a world of good. Enjoy! Patrick Dodd aka Slim Douglas
