Whereas the first Slows CD, Be Patient or Be Something Something Else, had Odd Nosdam hip-hop beats intermixed with Boards of Canada field recordings, Hotel Czechoslovakia mines deeper territory. Following in the steps of ambient and minimal techno artists such as Gas and The Sight Below, The Slows now create soundscapes instead of songs. Gone are the breakbeats and scratchy samples. In their place are layers of timpani drums, plucked harps, and ethereal choirs; looped violins, horns, and bassoons. Vocals are also intermixed with the classical instrumentation: plaintive wails, repeated words, Beach Boys-esque harmonies (along with radio chatter and barking dogs). Created entirely on a Mac laptop using Garageband and samples, Hotel Czechoslovakia will transport listeners to a intimate headspace where the faraway dawn on the horizon is merely light peeking in under the door.
